The hotel
César Ritz on the Place Vendôme.
Behind the arcades of the square stood two private houses, the Hôtel Crozat of 1703 and the Hôtel de Gramont of 1705. César Ritz and Auguste Escoffier bought them in 1897, the architect Charles Mewès rebuilt the interior, and the Ritz opened on 1 June 1898. It was among the first hotels in Paris with a bathroom, electric light and a telephone in every room.
Mohamed Al Fayed bought the hotel in 1979 and added a spa and pool in the 1980s. In 2012 it closed for the first time in its history, and Thierry Despont spent four years rebuilding it, through a roof fire in 2016. It reopened on 6 June 2016. The École Ritz Escoffier, the cooking school opened in 1988, teaches in its own kitchen inside the hotel. The Ritz has never applied for the official Palace label.
- Bar Hemingway The bar named after Ernest Hemingway, who came here often, one of several bars in the house.
- Ritz Club & Spa 1,560 square metres over two floors below the hotel, with a pool lined in mosaic.
- Ritz Escoffier The cooking school founded in 1988, with its own kitchen inside the hotel.
