The hotel

Since 1954 at Rose Hall.

Half Moon opened in 1954 at Rose Hall, on the coast east of Montego Bay. Three of the founding families still own it. Over the decades the estate grew to some 400 acres and two miles of shoreline, with a golf course by Robert Trent Jones Sr., an equestrian centre and villas spread through the gardens. Salamander Collection manages it today, and it belongs to the Legend Collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica in October 2025 and the resort closed for repairs. It came back in stages: Eclipse at Half Moon, the newer beachfront wing, and the rebuilt Villas reopened on 2 April 2026. The older Founders Cove rooms are due in a second phase later in 2026, with Hibiscus and Ocean Court after that. More than 850 people work at Half Moon, and the team grows back as each part returns.

What is open now.

Half Moon is reopening in phases. As of autumn 2026, guests stay at Eclipse or in the Villas; the older wings return later.

  • Beachfront Eclipse at Half Moon 57 rooms and suites on the beach, most with a balcony or terrace, around an infinity-edge pool.
  • Six or seven bedrooms The Villas Rebuilt after the storm, each with its own pool, a dining cabana, a cook, a housekeeper and a butler.
  • Reopening Founders Cove The resort's original rooms, due back in a second phase later in 2026. No firm date yet.

  • Arrival Check-in from 3 pm, check-out by noon. Private transfers from Sangster are booked in advance.
  • Reopening Some rooms, restaurants and services are still closed after Hurricane Melissa. Ask the resort what is open for your dates.

Getting there

Flying to Montego Bay.

Sangster International is about five and a half miles away, roughly ten minutes by car. Private jets land at the same airport, where Signature and IAM Jet Centre handle business aircraft.

Traffic peaks between November and April, and again at Christmas, New Year and spring break.
