The hotel

A Soviet sanatorium, made over.

The building began as a Soviet resort for workers, in the mountains at Stepantsminda. The Adjara Group, which runs the Rooms Hotels brand, rebuilt it and opened it as a hotel in 2013. Two designers who had met as students at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts gathered old timber from mountain villages and used it throughout, with worn brick and cognac leather.

The lobby has floor-to-ceiling glass, tall bookshelves, a fire and posters from Soviet mountain films. Every room has its own balcony, facing either the forest or the mountains; the mountain side looks straight at Gergeti Trinity Church and the 5,054-metre summit of Mount Kazbek. Below the rooms, the heated indoor pool has wood-planked floors and the same view through the glass, and a broad terrace runs off the Lobby Bar.

  • The pool A large heated indoor pool with wood-planked floors and the mountains through the glass, with a sauna alongside.
  • The terrace A broad terrace off the Lobby Bar, facing Kazbek, for drinks after a day's walking.
  • The library A sunny library and a lounge with a wood-burning fire.
