The hotel
A tower and a hutong off Wangfujing.
The Waldorf Astoria opened on Jinyu Hutong in 2014, the brand's second hotel in China after Shanghai, on the former site of Xianliang Temple. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill designed the main block in bronze, expected to change colour as it ages. Next to it, a wing of hutong suites stands around a traditional courtyard, joined to the tower by an underground passage.
The street has a link to the New York original. Nearby stood the residence of Li Hongzhang, the Qing official said to have been the first Chinese guest at the Waldorf Astoria in 1896. Inside, Yabu Pushelberg used black lacquer, red and gold, and a portrait by Ling Jian hangs at check-in. The owner is China Oil & Foodstuffs Corporation, COFCO, and Hilton runs the hotel. Wangfujing and the Forbidden City are a short ride away.
