The hotel
Built by hand in the Paro valley.
Zhiwaling Heritage was the first five-star hotel in Bhutan to be wholly Bhutanese owned and run, according to the Department of Tourism. More than sixty artisans spent three years shaping its beams, cornices, columns and stonework by hand, and the buildings take their lines from the dzongs, the fortress monasteries of the country, with carved wood and painted murals inside.
The temple on the upper floor is built from timbers reclaimed from a monastery some 450 years old. Around the main house, eight cottages are named after the Eight Lucky Signs of Buddhism. The hotel stands at Satsam Chorten, a few minutes' drive from the centre of Paro, with the cliffs that hold Tiger's Nest above it. Inside, the floors carry hand-knotted rugs, and an archery range lies out in the grounds.
- A temple of its own The shrine upstairs, made from reclaimed monastery timbers, is one of the experiences the hotel arranges for guests.
- Archery Bhutan's national sport, played on the hotel's own range in the grounds.
- Menlha Spa Treatments inspired by Tara, a heated indoor pool and an outdoor hot stone bath.
