The hotel

A farmhouse under the monastery.

Gangtey Lodge was founded by Khin Omar Win and Brett Melzer, who had earlier built Malikha Lodge in the far north of Myanmar. It took three years to build. The lodge stands at about 3,000 metres at the head of the Phobjikha Valley, a nature reserve, with Gangtey Monastery a short walk up the hill. The road from Paro crosses the Dochu La pass on the way, a drive of four to five hours.

The suites follow the shape of a Bhutanese farmhouse, finished in leather, wool and wood. The main building has the pitched roofs and arched windows of the valley. From late October to mid-March the black-necked cranes winter on the valley floor, and the nights drop below freezing while the days climb to around ten degrees. Meals are served in the main house at no set times, and the monks next door lead guided meditation for guests.

  • The monastery next door Guided meditation with the monks of Gangtey, and a private breakfast with a blessing at the monastery.
  • Hot stone bath A wooden tub in the spa hut, filled with mineral water and heated with stones from an open fire.
  • The valley Walks and hikes across the Phobjikha Valley, and in winter the chance to watch the black-necked cranes.

Rooms & suites

A fire, a bath and the valley.

All twelve suites have underfloor heating, a fireplace and a free-standing roll-top bath set against floor-length windows.

  • Monastery side Suites facing Gangtey Goenpa Closer to the daily life of the monastery up the hill.
  • Valley side Suites facing away The calmer side of the lodge, looking away from the monastery over the valley.
