The city
Under Mont Orgueil.
Gorey sits on the boundary of St Martin and Grouville, at the foot of Mont Orgueil. The castle was raised after the Duchy of Normandy was lost to the French crown at the start of the thirteenth century, and grew over the next two hundred and fifty years; in 1600 Walter Raleigh, then Governor, refused to have it pulled down. Jersey Heritage has cared for it since 1994.
Below, the pier was once the centre of an oyster trade that employed at least two thousand men in the early nineteenth century, and the end of the Jersey Eastern Railway. From the pier the view runs across the Royal Bay of Grouville to La Rocque, and the village has Sumas, listed by MICHELIN; St Helier is seven kilometres away and Longueville Manor closer still.
