The city
A castle in the bay, a market in the town.
St Helier takes its name from Helerius, a hermit who settled on a rock in St Aubin's Bay in the sixth century; his islet now carries Elizabeth Castle, reached on foot across the causeway at low tide. The town is home to some 36,000 people, more than a third of the island, and still has its cast-iron Victorian Central Market of 1882, set around an ornamental fountain.
In Liberation Square, in front of the Pomme d'Or, a statue of islanders raising the Union Flag marks the Liberation of the island. Bohemia, on Green Street, has kept its MICHELIN star for twenty-two years in a row. July and August are the warmest months, with afternoons of about twenty degrees and a sea at seventeen or eighteen.
