The city
The surfers' shore.
The bay runs for five miles down the western shore of the island, inside Jersey's Coastal National Park. Across the road from the sand are the dunes of Les Mielles, a nature reserve whose interpretation centre is in Kempt Tower, which the British completed in 1834 and named after the Master-General of the Ordnance.
Jersey's surfers have been coming here long enough for their club to count among the oldest in Europe, and on a windy day the sand is shared with kite surfers, windsurfers and blokarts. In summer the RNLI watches over parts of the beach. July and August bring the warmest water of the year; at the southern end, the Ocean restaurant in The Atlantic Hotel has the bay in view.
Arriving
The runway is behind the dunes.
Jersey Airport is in St Peter, about two and a half kilometres from the middle of the bay, and has customs and immigration in the building.
