The hotel
A henequen estate in the forest.
San Antonio Chablé began as a cattle ranch and turned to henequen, the agave fibre that made Yucatán rich, in the 1850s. Historic Hotels Worldwide dates the first buildings to 1650. The estate covers some three hundred hectares of forest about forty kilometres from Mérida, and since 2016 the restored hacienda house has been the centre of the resort, its rooms used as the common spaces for guests.
Jorge Borja designed the forty casitas of about two hundred square metres each, low and hidden among the trees, with indoor and outdoor showers and a pool of their own. The design won a Prix Versailles in 2017. The spa stands beside a cenote, the kind of natural well the Maya held sacred, and the kitchen garden supplies the restaurants.
- The cenote spa Nine treatment rooms over the cenote, with a sauna, steam room, warm and cold pools and temazcal sweat-lodge rituals.
- The tequila room A collection of 3,435 bottles of tequila and mezcal, the oldest a José Cuervo label from 1845, tasted by reservation.
- Days out Uxmal and Chichén Itzá are within a day trip, and the resort arranges cenote swims, cycling and walks in the forest.
