The hotel
The governor's house, then the journalists' club.
The mansion went up in 1917 as the residence of the French governor of Siem Reap, in the Art Deco manner of Indochina. Decades later it became the Foreign Correspondents' Club, a meeting place for reporters, photographers and passing travellers. The name stayed with the building.
Avani took over the management and spent seven million dollars on it, reopening in August 2019 as its first hotel in Cambodia. Sixty new rooms went into an extension, linked to the old house by a footbridge. Malee Whitcraft and Bloom Architecture used rain tree wood and sandstone, and left typewriters and framed front pages in the rooms.
- Scribe The bar on the river side, in copper, wood and sandstone, a new take on the old correspondents' bar.
- Two pools Both salt water, one of them black-bottomed: the main pool in the Heritage wing and a larger one in the Colonial wing.
- In town The Royal Independence Gardens are across the road, and Pub Street and the markets are a walk away. Angkor Wat is about ten minutes by car.
