The hotel
A royal guesthouse, rebuilt from photographs.
The French architect Laurent Mondet drew the building in 1962 for King Norodom Sihanouk, who used it to house visiting guests. It was called Villa Princière: twelve low chalets around a curved pool, in the New Khmer style that Cambodia's architects were developing at the time. War and neglect followed, and by the 1990s the villa stood empty.
Aman bought it in 2002 and rebuilt it from old black-and-white photographs, opening that December as Amansara. The suites are terrazzo and timber, each with its own walled courtyard and a deep soaking tub. Angkor Wat is about ten minutes up the road, and the temple days are what the resort is built around.
- Temples by remork Early and late tours of Angkor in a private motorcycle carriage, with a driver and a guide, timed to miss the crowds.
- Beyond Angkor Jeep trips through the countryside, a boat among the floating villages of Tonlé Sap and Khmer cooking classes at a village house.
- Pools and spa A 17-metre curved pool from the original villa, a 25-metre lap pool, and an Aman Spa of four treatment rooms facing a reflection pond and an old rain tree.
