The hotel

Three inns, one grand hotel.

Innkeepers have worked this corner of the square for centuries. The Three Green Trees, an inn of 22 rooms with stabling for 120 horses, was rebuilt to a design by Ignác Feigler and became The Green Tree, where the city saw its first film in December 1896. Henry Prüger then bought it and the National next door, joined the buildings and opened the Carlton-Savoy in 1912.

Milan Michal Harminc rebuilt it between 1925 and 1929 under a single roof. The guest book names Thomas Edison, Alfred Nobel, Theodore Roosevelt and Tomáš Masaryk. After 1945 it was renamed Moscow and declined. Engineers argued against demolition in 1977; it closed in 1992 and reopened in October 2001 after a reconstruction begun in 1998, its neoclassical front restored to face the Slovak National Theatre across Hviezdoslav Square.
