The hotel

The archduchess's twin palaces.

In 1902 Archduchess Maria Klotild had the architects Kálmán Giergl and Flóris Korb build two palaces facing each other across the street at the Pest end of the Elisabeth Bridge: the Matild and the Klotild, mirror images of one another. The Matild had the first lift in Hungary, and on its ground floor the Belvárosi Kávéház drew the writers and poets of the city.

After restoration the Matild opened in 2021 as a Luxury Collection hotel of 130 rooms. Many look over the bridge or the Danube. The old literary café is now the Matild Ballroom, used for private events. Above it all, the Crown Tower Suite climbs three floors inside a tower 157 feet high, with a view in every direction over the inner city.

  • Spago by Wolfgang Puck A ground-floor restaurant of 120 seats with a terrace, which also runs room service round the clock.
  • The Duchess A hidden cocktail bar on the roof, looking over the Danube at sunset.
  • The spa In the basement, with a hammam, a salt room, sauna and steam rooms, and a gym alongside.
