The hotel
Guest houses at the palace gate.
More than a century ago, these pavilions by the East Gate of the Summer Palace lodged visitors waiting to be received by the Empress Dowager Cixi. The courtyards follow the layout of the palace itself, joined by covered corridors, and the rooms keep their high ceilings, timber beams, brick floors and wooden screens, furnished in the Ming manner. The palace grounds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, begin on the other side of the wall.
Aman opened the hotel in 2008, its first in China. On 29 December 2025 the partnership ended and the hotel took the name Beijing Yihe Hotel; Yiheyuan is the Chinese name of the Summer Palace. It stayed open throughout, and the hotel said bookings would carry over unaffected. The pools, the spa and a squash court lie underground, below the courtyards.
- A private gate Guests can walk into the Summer Palace through the hotel's own gate, including outside the usual opening hours.
- Under the courtyards The pools, the spa and a squash court sit below ground, beneath the old pavilions.
