The hotel
A lawyer's palace in the pines.
Walter von Pannwitz, a lawyer, art collector and adviser to Kaiser Wilhelm, built the house for himself and his wife Catalina Roth shortly before the First World War. He took Italian Renaissance palaces as the model and set it among the villas and pine woods of Grunewald, on the western edge of Berlin. Sources give 1911, 1912 or 1914 as the date.
Karl Lagerfeld once designed its interiors, and a suite still carries his name. Today the fashion and interior designer Patrick Hellmann owns the hotel and has dressed every room himself, in velvet, gold leaf and embroidered headboards, with nods to the 1920s and Art Deco. Glass chandeliers, red rugs and portraits fill the old reception rooms, and the bathrooms are lined in glossy tiles. Fifty-three rooms and suites share the house.
- The spa A heated indoor pool looking out on the pines, with a hammam, Finnish sauna and gym in the basement.
- Breakfast in the conservatory Le Jardin, a glass room opening onto the garden, serves breakfast in the morning light.
- The whole house Weddings, shoots and parties of up to 400 guests, or the entire hotel booked by one party.
