The hotel
A Ming village in the western hills.
Xitan stands on the site of Yangpoyuan, a village first built in the late Ming dynasty at the foot of Tanzhe Shan, in the mountains west of Beijing. The old buildings were restored and the new ones follow the slope, mostly on one storey, so the hotel keeps the scale of the village. It opened in May 2022 and joined Relais & Châteaux the same year.
Nikken Sekkei laid out the grounds with Kanji Nomura of Nomura Garden Laboratory, borrowing from Japanese dry gardens and from the views of the valley. Tanzhe Temple, more than 1,700 years old and the oldest recorded Buddhist site in Beijing, lies about a kilometre below. The 38 rooms are spread across courtyards on a site of about five acres, and each has its own hot spring tub. The kitchen belongs to Xin Rong Ji.
- Qin Spa A spa built around water and hydrotherapy, with a meditation room and a gym alongside.
- Tanzhe Temple A short walk downhill, with ancient trees and temple bells. The hotel also arranges sutra copying and a hiking trail in the hills.
- Evenings in A tea house, a whisky bar and a private THX cinema, a long way from the traffic of central Beijing.
