The hotel
A power plant turned hotel.
Shougang Park covers former industrial land in Shijingshan, on the western edge of Beijing, and draws on the area's steelmaking past. The hotel took over a disused power plant there and opened in January 2022, on the eve of the Winter Olympics, as an official hotel of the Games. The Big Air ramp stands next door, with Qunming Lake and Shijingshan Hill in view.
The Milan studio Lissoni & Partners kept the concrete walls and steel roof trusses and gave the main hall, more than twenty metres high, a new glass facade. Rooms sit in a separate block reached by a raised bridge. A glazed wellness wing holds the pool and gym. The design has won awards for industrial style and for conversion, and the Forbidden City lies about twenty kilometres to the east.
