The hotel
Two listed houses and a gallery's worth of art.
Stephan Landwehr, who has run Grill Royal since 2007, opened the hotel in late 2022 with Moritz Estermann and the Icelandic chef Victoria Eliasdóttir. It took four years. David Chipperfield restored two listed houses, the older from the nineteenth century, the other from 1910, and designed the new part that joins them. Irina Kromayer, Etienne Descloux and Katariina Minits did the interiors: herringbone parquet, handmade tiles, ceilings three to four metres high.
The art was chosen by Kirsten Landwehr, once a gallerist, and Krist Gruijthuijsen of the KW Institute. Every room carries a work by a different artist, and more than a hundred pieces hang across the building. Thomas Demand did a wallpaper, Karl Holmqvist a neon for the breakfast room, Cyprien Gaillard the weathercock on the roof. One suite looks straight down Unter den Linden.
- Ninety-three rooms, ninety-three artists Alicja Kwade, Tino Sehgal and Danh Vo are among the names, with painting, photography and installation all represented.
- The bar and the fire The lobby opens into the bar, with a wood fire in the lounge and private dining rooms behind.
- On the roof A terrace with its own bar above Mitte, under Cyprien Gaillard's weathercock.
