The hotel
Four centuries under one roof.
The Franciscans began their cloister and church in Getsemaní around 1555. In 1925 Gastón Lelarge, who had worked for Charles Garnier on the Paris Opéra, built the Beaux-Arts Club Cartagena. The hotel also takes in four former cinemas and the old Teatro Colón, now the Veracruz ballroom, where restorers found a late sixteenth-century fresco under the plaster of the dome.
WATG tied the buildings together, and François Catroux drew the interiors before his death in 2020; it was his last project. His protégé François Bompard of SBM finished the work, with Wimberly Interiors and AvroKO, and Poli Mallarino made the furniture and textiles. Archaeologists working under the old chapel floors found human remains, and a cistern found beneath one bar gave El Aljibe its name. The hotel opened in April 2026 and received a MICHELIN Key in the same year's selection, its first.
- The cloister Eighteen of the colonial rooms open onto the Franciscan courtyard, with iron four-posters and carved mirrors.
- UMARI Six treatment rooms in the monks' former larder, using oils from Colombian plants and fruit.
- Rooftops Rooftop pools look across to the dome of San Pedro Claver and the bay.
