The hotel
The Grand Hotel Royal, twice rebuilt.
The Grand Hotel Royal opened on 30 April 1896, in time for the Millennium Exhibition, on the new Grand Boulevard. The Lumière brothers gave Budapest's first film show in the hotel. War left the building badly damaged, and on 4 November 1956 Soviet tanks shelled it. It was rebuilt with modern interiors, reopened in 1961, and finally closed in October 1991. The cinema made from its ballroom kept going until 1997.
The Corinthia group spent about 100 million euros on it and reopened it on 30 April 2003, to the day 107 years after the first opening. The ballroom is the one room left from 1896, and the atrium now rises six storeys. Next door, the Royal Spa built by Vilmos Freund in the 1880s had been shut since 1944; it was found again in 1983 and restored to its Art Deco look.
- The Royal Spa More than a thousand square metres in a restored building next to the hotel, with a 15-metre pool under a glass roof.
- The atrium A court six storeys high at the centre of the hotel, where the Brasserie serves breakfast.
- The ballroom The one room that survives from 1896. For decades it was a cinema, which closed in 1997.
