The hotel
A Renaissance palace on the river.
The building was the palace of the Giuntini family, its design attributed to Filippo Brunelleschi around 1400. In the nineteenth century it became a hotel, later the Grand Hotel Royal de la Paix, and Queen Victoria and Leland Stanford Jr were among its guests. The Winter Garden, under its stained-glass roof, was added around 1922. The palace faces Piazza Ognissanti at the edge of the Arno.
The Aga Khan modernised the hotel in the 1980s and 1990s, and after a further restoration it opened as The St. Regis Florence in 2011. Rooms come in three styles, Florentine, Renaissance and Medici, with frescoes, coffered ceilings and antique furniture. Each is named after a notable Italian, and one suite was designed by Bottega Veneta. Bathrooms are in marble, and every room comes with butler service.
- The Winter Garden Under the stained-glass roof are the restaurant and the bar, where a bottle of champagne is opened with a sabre each evening.
- A butler for every room Butler service comes with every room in the house, a St. Regis custom.
- Café Ginori Afternoon tea on Ginori porcelain, and a Sunday brunch.
