The hotel
The Salviati villa above Florence.
The villa stands on the hillside below Fiesole, about fifteen minutes by car from the centre of Florence. In the sixteenth century the Salviati, a family grown rich on the wool trade, bought it, covered the walls in frescoes and gave it their name. Much of that decoration survives, along with painted ceilings, in rooms that look over the gardens or down onto the dome.
Later owners left their marks. An American, Phelps Thomas, laid out the terraced gardens and had the architect Corinto Corinti build conservatories and a grand staircase. The art critic Ugo Ojetti and his wife Fernanda added a large library. Restored as a hotel of 39 rooms, it was named Andrew Harper's Hideaway of the Year in 2011. The spa now fills the former greenhouse.
- Aquae Vitali Spa In the old greenhouse, with a sauna, a hammam and a hot tub.
- The pool garden An outdoor pool set in a botanical garden, open in the warm months, with its own bar.
- Into town A free shuttle runs guests down to the centre of Florence when they book direct.
