The hotel
On the city's central square.
The Savoy opened in 1893 on Piazza della Repubblica, a few minutes on foot from the Duomo, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio. Caffè Gilli, more than 270 years old, stands across the square, and from November to May an old carousel turns in the middle. Via de' Tornabuoni, where the Negroni is said to have been first mixed in 1920, is a few streets west.
Under Rocco Forte Hotels the house was redone in the spring of 2018, when 102 rooms became 80, more than thirty of them suites. Olga Polizzi, the group's head of design, did the interiors, with Carrara marble bathrooms and touches of Emilio Pucci. In 2025 the restaurant, Irene, reopened in walnut and black and white marble, named for Sir Rocco's mother, Lady Forte. Bar Artemisia, after the painter Artemisia Gentileschi, opened beside it.
- Irene Fulvio Pierangelini writes the Tuscan menu, and the veranda puts your table on Piazza della Repubblica.
- Bar Artemisia A dark, painterly bar after Gentileschi and Caravaggio, with cocktails by Salvatore Calabrese and Federico Pavan.
- On two wheels Suite guests can borrow Velorbis bicycles to ride out across the city.
