The hotel
Where Bahrain's hotel trade began.
The Bahrain Hotels Company was set up in 1967, and the Gulf Hotel was its first building. It opened in October 1969, when, in the hotel's words, the waters of the Gulf were a stone's throw away. Reclaimed land has since moved the shore further off. The group calls it the first five-star hotel in Bahrain, and its convention centre now holds twenty-one venues over more than 4,780 square metres.
The hotel is still owned and run by the same Bahraini group. In 2024 it signed with Marriott to join the Autograph Collection, and a phased renovation of the rooms, the lobby and the leisure areas is under way while the hotel stays open. The name stays. So do the restaurants that made it known: Persian, Japanese, Indian, Chinese and an English pub.
- The Gulf SPA Three floors of treatments, with Arabic therapies alongside facials, a salon and a ladies' fitness club.
- Ten restaurants Persian at Takht Jamsheed, Japanese at Sato, Indian at Rasoi, Chinese at China Garden, and the Sherlock Holmes pub.
- Lagoon pool An outdoor pool laid out like a lagoon, with a sloped entry, and the BodyZone gym alongside.
