The hotel
At the corner of Chang'an and Wangfujing.
Grand Hyatt Beijing is part of Oriental Plaza, the block of shops and offices that Li Ka-shing's group built on Chang'an Avenue where it meets Wangfujing Street. Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City are a walk to the west. An underground passage links the hotel with the shops of the plaza. Li's own Harbour Plaza brand was meant to run the hotel, but before the opening the investors handed the management to Hyatt.
Hirsch Bedner Associates renovated the hotel, and it reopened in late 2024 with 518 rooms and suites. Two things stayed as they were. Made in China, the northern Chinese dining room, still roasts its Peking duck in a wood-fired oven and has fed heads of state. The pool under the building keeps its tropical plants and waterfalls under a virtual sky.
