The hotel
The first tower at Guomao.
China World Hotel opened in August 1990 as part of the China World Trade Center on Jianguomenwai Avenue, in the district Beijing now calls Guomao. The Japanese firm Nikken Sekkei drew it with the French builder Fougerolle, and LRF Designers did the first rooms. Shangri-La runs it, together with China World Summit Wing at the top of the China World Tower next door.
In 2003 the hotel spent thirty million US dollars on its public rooms and all 716 bedrooms. Wilson Associates designed the new lobby: red lacquered pillars with gold leaf, ten crystal chandeliers and a curved marble staircase under two skylights. The largest suite, the China Suite, measures 280 square metres, and the Grand Ballroom seats eight hundred. Scene a Café was rebuilt around eight open kitchens.

- Connected China World Mall is two minutes' walk away indoors, with the Guomao station on lines 1 and 10.
- Lobby Lounge Calm by day under the chandeliers, with cocktails and live classical music in the evening.
