The hotel
An apartment block turned hotel.
In 1997 Daimler was building Potsdamer Platz out of the wasteland left by the Wall, and one of its residential blocks stood half finished. Lutz Hesse and Christian Andresen, who already ran serviced apartments on Friedrichstraße, took it on and turned it into a hotel in a little over a year. It opened in 1999 as The Madison, and the two founders still own it.
That origin explains the rooms. They begin on the fifth floor, most have a pantry kitchen and a walk-in closet, and the smallest studio measures 40 square metres. Hesse drew the interiors himself: white walls, blond wood, gold Bisazza tiles. FACIL followed in 2001 and won its second star in 2013; the ONO Spa went on the roof in 2008. Some rooms have balconies or terraces facing the Tiergarten.
- FACIL Two MICHELIN stars on the fifth floor, under a glass roof that can be opened to the sky. Michael Kempf cooks there on weekdays only.
- ONO Spa Six hundred square metres on the eleventh floor, designed by Braun & Braun, with views over the city and a rooftop gym open around the clock.
- Room to live in Ten categories, all with space to work and unpack, and some with balconies or terraces facing the Tiergarten.
