The hotel
The Esplanade on the canal.
The Grand Hotel Esplanade opened on Lützowufer in 1988, in West Berlin, facing the Landwehr Canal at the southern edge of the Tiergarten. It was renovated in 2007, and in 2015 it joined Starwood as the first Sheraton in Berlin, the eleventh in Germany. At the time its bars included Harry's New York Bar. Today the hotel lists the Ellipse Lounge, a breakfast room and Harry's Legacy.
In 2023 the owners planned to close it in March 2024 and pull much of it down for offices and a smaller hotel. The closure was called off. In late 2025 the plan changed to a renovation in place, expected to begin in 2026 with the hotel open. Step Partners took over the management from 1 December 2025, alongside the owner DFI, with Marriott still behind the brand.
