The hotel

A Danish embassy by the zoo.

Denmark had to leave its chancellery on Alsenstraße in the late 1930s, when the site was set aside for Albert Speer's plans for Germania. Johann Emil Schaudt, who had designed KaDeWe, built the new embassy on Drakestrasse between 1938 and 1940: a curved limestone front some sixty metres long, with two bronzes by Paul Eschert at the door. Germany invaded Denmark in April of the year it was finished.

After the war it housed the Danish military mission, then a consulate from 1949. It opened as a hotel in 2012. The architect Annette Axthelm reworked the listed building and Patricia Urquiola did the interiors, keeping a Danish feel. Stue is Danish for living room. Rooms face the courtyard, the Tiergarten or the zoo. Accor plans to rename it Sofitel Berlin Das Stue early in 2027.

  • The zoo next door Some rooms look straight into Berlin Zoo, others over the Tiergarten or the inner courtyard.
  • Danish design Arne Jacobsen Egg chairs in the rooms, set in Patricia Urquiola's interiors.
  • Spa and pool A heated indoor pool, spa treatments and a gym inside the old embassy.
