The hotel
A garden inside the block.
The year 1910 is carved above one of the doors. The house was built as a family residence, and from 1947 the Belgian chemical group Solvay used it as its Spanish headquarters for almost sixty years. When Solvay left in 2005, Alma Hotels bought the building, and Habitan Architecture rebuilt it around a seven-storey atrium lit from above. The atrium joins the old stone front on Carrer de Mallorca to a new garden side in glass, steel and cedar.
The hotel opened in 2011, and the Ausejo family still runs it. Nori Furlan and Paco Llonch of Studio Coriumcasa did the interiors in wood, leather and white stone, and laid out the garden at the back on Ildefons Cerdà's plan of 1860 for open, planted block interiors. The city has since shown it during its Architecture Weeks, and the MICHELIN Guide lists the hotel with one Key.
