The hotel
The hotel of kings, opposite the Tuileries.
Charles-Augustin Meurice ran a coaching inn in Calais and opened his first Paris hotel on the rue Saint-Honoré in 1815. In 1835 the hotel moved to the rue de Rivoli, facing the Tuileries. Kings stayed so often that it became known as the hôtel des rois. Salvador Dalí took the old royal suite for about a month every year for more than thirty years.
German forces requisitioned the hotel in 1940, and in August 1944 it was General von Choltitz's headquarters when he refused Hitler's order to destroy Paris. The Brunei Investment Agency bought Le Meurice in 1997, and it is run by Dorchester Collection. Philippe Starck reworked the public rooms from 2007; Charles Jouffre and Lally & Berger have since redone the bedrooms in a Versailles spirit. More than four hundred staff look after the house.
- Belle Etoile The penthouse suite on the seventh floor, with a planted terrace and a 360° view over Paris, a home cinema and a dining room for ten.
- La Pâtisserie du Meurice The pastry shop of Cédric Grolet, inside the hotel on the rue de Rivoli.
- Bar 228 The hotel bar, with leather armchairs, dark wood and live jazz every evening.
