The hotel
The finance minister's house.
Jules Hardouin-Mansart, architect of the Hall of Mirrors, built the Grand Contrôle in 1681 for Louis XIV. It became the residence of the Controller-General of Finances, the most powerful official after the king. Here Jacques Necker, Louis XVI's minister, received Benjamin Franklin to discuss help for the American rebels. After the Revolution the house passed through other uses, then stood empty under a leaking roof.
In 2015 the château asked for hotel proposals, and the project that won opened as Airelles in 2021. Christophe Tollemer restored the rooms to an inventory taken in 1788, with the Petit Trianon as his model. Pierre Frey rewove fabrics from the Versailles archives, the furniture came from antique dealers and sales across Europe, and the lighting recalls candles.
- Versailles after hours Private tours of the château, the Trianons and the Queen's Hamlet once the gates close, a different one each day for longer stays.
- The estate Golf carts through the gardens, a boat on the Grand Canal and rides across the park at dawn.
- Valmont spa A 15-metre indoor pool with frescoes and marble, a hammam and a sauna, below ground. Guests book the pool for themselves.
Rooms & suites
Rooms named after the court.
Fourteen rooms and suites share the Grand Contrôle and the smaller Petit Contrôle. Each takes the name of someone linked to the house or to Versailles, and every stay comes with a butler.
- Petit Contrôle Rooms Lower ceilings and a smaller scale, in the wing that also holds the gym.
- For families Paul de Beauvilliers, Loménie de Brienne, Marquis de Fouquet Family suites that sleep four, with children on a sofa bed.
- Signature Suite Necker About 120 square metres, with one bedroom, four-metre ceilings and views three ways. It can connect with a second room.
