The hotel
A plantation turned cottage colony.
The peninsula was once part of Lord Monson's Round Hill Estate, planted with sugar cane, coconuts, pimento and pineapples; the pineapple is still the resort's emblem. In the early 1950s the Jamaican-born John Pringle turned it into a resort, and the first guests came in 1953. Villas went up on the hillside, and their owners came too: Oscar Hammerstein owned Villa 12, and the Kennedys spent their honeymoon in Villa 10.
The villas are still privately owned and decorated by their owners, and Ralph Lauren keeps one of them. He also designed the interiors of Pineapple House, where the hotel rooms look over the bay. Hurricane Melissa closed the resort in October 2025; damage was slight, and it reopened on 8 December 2025. Josef Forstmayr has run the place for more than forty years.
