The hotel
Kreuzberg, with a piano.
The building on the corner of Oranienplatz went up in 1912 as offices and came through both world wars. Over the century it held a café and concert room, shops, a billiard hall and, for a time, the nightclub Trash. It has been a listed monument since 1995, and its Art Nouveau front still faces the square, a few minutes on foot from Kottbusser Tor.
Work on the hotel started in 2014, and Orania.Berlin opened in August 2017, laid out by Dietmar Müller-Elmau of Schloss Elmau. Jennifer and Philipp Vogel have run it from the start, she as hotel manager and he in the kitchen. Most nights the salon fills with live music, with pianist Matti Klein choosing the players, and the Peking duck oven in the restaurant turns out the Xberg Duck.
- Music most nights Jazz, soul, funk and world music in the salon and bar, around a Steinway, free for hotel guests.
- The Xberg Duck Philipp Vogel's Kreuzberg take on Peking duck, roasted in a duck oven he installed after his time working in China.
- Kreuzberg outside Kottbusser Tor station is about five minutes on foot, and the hotel stands on Oranienplatz itself.
