The hotel

Hadspen House and the Hobhouses.

William Player bought a farmhouse at Hadspen in 1687 and spent about a decade enlarging it. In 1785 Henry Hobhouse bought the house with 717 acres, and his family kept it for more than two centuries. In the 1960s Penelope Hobhouse remade its curved walled kitchen garden, the Parabola, and opened it to visitors in 1970. The house, of local limestone, is now listed Grade II*.

In 2013 the South African couple Koos Bekker and Karen Roos bought the estate. They opened The Newt in 2019, with rooms in the house and in the old farmyard of cyder mills, barns and grain stores. The estate is a working farm again, around 2,000 acres in all, and the apples go into the estate's own cyder. A reconstruction of a Roman villa stands on the estate too.

  • The gardens Thirty acres of formal and productive gardens around the house, with the Parabola, orchards and lakes beyond.
  • The spa An indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam room, hammam and salt chamber, with treatments using plants from the physic garden.
  • Cyder and bees A working cyder cellar and mill, and Beezantium, the estate's honeybee colony.
