The hotel

Four houses for a marquess.

The hotel takes its name from the Marquess of Queensberry who commissioned these houses as a home, and John Wood the Younger, architect of the Royal Crescent, designed them. Four of them now make one hotel, joined inside but kept largely as they were built, with their Georgian details intact. Behind lie small walled courtyard gardens, and inside are 29 rooms, each designed on its own.

The Queensberry is a family business, run by a husband and wife, and the MICHELIN Guide notes its personality more than its grandeur. Upper Bath is all around: most of the sights are within ten minutes on foot. In autumn 2024 the hotel became one of 72 in the UK and Ireland to receive a Key. Downstairs, Chris Cleghorn's Olive Tree holds the only MICHELIN star in the city itself.

  • The Olive Tree Chris Cleghorn's restaurant in the basement holds a MICHELIN star and four AA Rosettes, the only restaurant in Somerset with four.
  • The Old Q Bar A small bar off the hall, for a drink before dinner downstairs.
  • Round the clock Room service runs day and night, with a shorter menu after 10 pm.
