The hotel
A farmhouse grown into a manor.
Whatley began as a farm on the edge of Easton Grey, and the MICHELIN Guide dates the house to 1802. In the 1920s a Canadian, Herbert Cox, bought the estate and had the architect Septimus Warwick add a Tudor-style wing. The house was listed in 1951, took the name Whatley Manor a decade later, and has received guests as a hotel since 1987.
In 2000 Marco and Alix Landolt bought it, restored the house and enlarged it over the next three years. The twelve acres around it were laid out as twenty-six separate gardens, many drawn from plans of the 1930s. The Dining Room first won a MICHELIN star in 2005, held two for some years, and holds one today under Ricki Weston.
