The hotel
Ten rooms on Beach Road, then a national monument.
Raffles opened on 1 December 1887 as a ten-room hotel in a former beach house, run by the Armenian Sarkies brothers on a lease from Syed Mohamed Alsagoff. The main building, by Regent Alfred John Bidwell of Swan and Maclaren, followed in 1899. In 1915 a bartender at the Long Bar, Ngiam Tong Boon, mixed the first Singapore Sling, and guests still drop peanut shells on the floor there.
Singapore made the hotel a National Monument on 4 March 1987. It closed again in December 2017 for a two-year restoration, with interiors by Alexandra Champalimaud. The facade and the gravel driveway stayed as they were. Inside, the front desk went; guests now check in at their suite, with a butler on call around the clock. The number of suites rose from 103 to 115, spread over nine categories.
- The Long Bar Where the Singapore Sling was first mixed in 1915, and where peanut shells still go on the floor.
- Personality Suites Suites named after former guests, among them Rudyard Kipling, John Wayne and Elizabeth Taylor.
- Afternoon tea Served in the Grand Lobby under a chandelier made in Prague. It is often booked a month ahead.
