The hotel
The town grew around the farm.
Estancia 25 de Mayo was among the first estancias on the southern shore of Lago Argentino, settled by the families who founded El Calafate. The town later spread across its land, so the old main house now stands a few blocks from the shops. In 2011 La Nación put the estancia at 14,000 hectares, including a nature reserve. Today the estancia is given over to visitors.
The hotel occupies that house and the buildings around it, built Patagonian style from logs and stone under green corrugated iron roofs. Objects from the farm's working days are kept in the house. It belongs to Tremun Hoteles, the group behind Las Hayas in Ushuaia, and the estancia still runs farm afternoons with sheepdogs, Hereford calves and hand shearing, and gaucho dinners at night.
- Farm afternoons A sheepdog working the flock, shearing by hand, fried bread and mate, then lamb and mulled wine on a deck by the stream.
- Walk to town The main street of El Calafate is about six hundred metres away, close enough to stroll to dinner.
- From the garden The kitchen uses vegetables from the hotel's own garden, and guests can borrow mountain bikes for the estancia trails.
