The hotel

The Oatley family's peninsula.

qualia opened in September 2007, built by Bob Oatley and his family. Oatley made his name in wine and ocean racing, and he put about two hundred million Australian dollars into the resort. It took the northern tip of the island, thirty acres of bush and garden with water on three sides, looking out over the Whitsundays and the Coral Sea.

The architect Chris Beckingham kept the buildings low and scattered them through the trees, each one-bedroom pavilion built in hoop pine with its own deck. Freedman Rembel did the interiors and made the furniture to order. Two restaurants and a spa with six treatment rooms sit among the pavilions, and the resort belongs to Luxury Lodges of Australia. Stays are for two nights or more.

  • Windward pools The Windward and Seaward pavilions face north-east over the Coral Sea, each with an infinity-edge plunge pool on the terrace.
  • Long Pavilion The main dining room, set among eucalyptus, cooking contemporary Australian food and hosting regular guest-chef evenings.
  • Spa qualia Six treatment rooms, two of them for couples with sunken baths.
