The hotel
Pink since 1947.
The Colony opened on 15 November 1947, a British Colonial building by the architects Simson & Holley between the beach and Worth Avenue. For decades it was the island's winter playground for the rich and famous, and it is now a county historic landmark. The Wetenhall family has owned part of it since 1970; Andrew and Sarah Wetenhall took it over in 2016. Behind the pink walls, each room is decorated differently.
For its 75th birthday in 2022 the hotel was redone from top to bottom. Hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper in the lobby shows a monkey sipping a martini, a nod to Johnnie Brown, the spider monkey that once belonged to the architect Addison Mizner and is now the hotel's mascot. Goop, Aerin Lauder and Serena & Lily put their names to villas and penthouses. In 2026 the MICHELIN Guide gave The Colony its first Key.
