The hotel
A Crosier monastery, a barracks, a hotel.
The Crosiers, an order of canons, were given land here in 1438 and built their monastery and Gothic church between 1440 and 1520. They stayed until 1797, when the French expelled them. The complex became a barracks and arms depot, then served for years as an agricultural research station, and slowly fell into disrepair. For a time it was also used as a temporary church. Some of the stained glass in the church windows is centuries old, and survived it all.
The hotelier Camille Oostwegel bought it in 2000 and the hotel opened in 2005. Interior designer Henk Vos put modern furniture by Philippe Starck, Marc Newson and Le Corbusier under the old vaults and frescoes, and Ingo Maurer designed the lighting. A glass lift rises through the nave, and the wine bar fills what was the choir. The rooms are spread through the old monastery, the gatekeeper's house and a modern annex.
- Breakfast in the church Served on a mezzanine built inside the Gothic nave, under the old vaults.
- The wine bar In the former choir, with the wine stored above ground in the church itself.
- Old town on foot The Vrijthof, the Basilica of Saint Servatius and the shops of the centre are a short walk away.
