The hotel

A hermit's grave, then a convent, then a hotel.

The hermit Gerlachus lived in the Geul valley and died in 1165. A monastery rose at his grave, built by Gosewijn IV of Valkenburg for the pilgrims who came to it, and from 1345 it housed daughters of the nobility. It was wrecked in 1574 during the Eighty Years' War. In 1795 a notary named Schoenmaeckers bought the complex and turned it into a château.

The last of the De Selys de Fanson family lived here until 1979, after which the buildings decayed. Camille Oostwegel, a hotelier born in neighbouring Houthem, bought the estate in 1994 and restored it. Pieter van Vollenhoven opened the hotel on 15 September 1997. The rooms are spread through the old farmhouse, the convent and the grain lofts, and the Ingendael nature reserve begins at the edge of the grounds.

  • The pool A Roman-style indoor pool, with a sauna and Turkish bath in the boutique spa beside it.
  • Two places to eat Les Salons for seasonal French cooking in the evening, and Burgemeester Quicx, a bistro and coffeehouse, for the rest of the day.
  • The valley Bicycles are lent by the hotel, and walks lead straight out into Ingendael and the hills of South Limburg.
