The hotel
A green tower at Porta Volta.
Hotel VIU opened in 2017, created by Antonio and Tommaso Viscardi on Via Aristotile Fioravanti, between Porta Volta and Porta Garibaldi. The architects Arassociati gave it a glass facade, and AG&P Greenscape framed it in a vertical garden that climbs the outside of the building. Herzog & de Meuron's building for the Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli stands a short walk away, across the old city gate.
Inside, Nicola Gallizia designed eight floors of rooms and public spaces, with white oak platform beds and noise-cancelling windows in the rooms. The kitchen belongs to Giancarlo Morelli, who runs the restaurant that bears his name and Bulk, a bar and all-day restaurant on the ground floor. At the top sit the terrace bar and the pool, open from sunrise to sunset for breakfast, lunch and cocktails.
- The rooftop pool An outdoor pool on the eighth-floor terrace, with a 360-degree view over the Milan skyline.
- Morelli The hotel restaurant of chef Giancarlo Morelli, with gourmet Milanese cooking, and a chef's table in the kitchen for up to fourteen.
