The hotel

A family hotel among the Graves vines.

In 1990 Daniel and Florence Cathiard bought Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a Grand Cru Classé de Graves at Martillac, on the southern edge of Bordeaux. The family still owns it. Their daughter Mathilde and her husband Bertrand Thomas went on to found Caudalie, the skincare brand made from grape seeds and vines, named after the measure of how long a wine stays on the palate.

Their other daughter, Alice, and her husband Jérôme Tourbier opened Les Sources de Caudalie in 1999, opposite the château, among its vines. A warm spring rises from more than 540 metres below the estate and feeds the spa. The rooms are spread over six houses, from La Bastide des Grands Crus to Le Village des Pêcheurs. In 2016 the hotel was named a Palace.

  • Spa Vinothérapie Treatments built on Caudalie's grape and vine extracts, with a hammam and a hot-water bath drawn from the estate's own spring.
  • The cellar Some 15,000 bottles, heavy on Pessac-Léognan, with Château Smith Haut Lafitte on the doorstep.
  • Two pools An indoor pool all year and an outdoor pool in the warmer months.
