The hotel

A village brought back.

Mužolini Donji is a hillside hamlet near Buje, in the north-west of Istria, raised on the site of a medieval fortification. Like many inland villages it emptied as people left for the towns, until only three inhabitants remained. Leopold Botteri, a former journalist who now makes olive oil, came across it and first bought the estate as a holiday home for himself and his friends.

The architect Boris Ružić turned the stone houses into a hotel, keeping their old fabric and adding modern materials and colour. Rooms mix restored antiques with designer chairs, and the art on the walls is by Duje Botteri. San Canzian opened on 1 August 2019. From the hamlet the views run over the hills towards the sea. The MICHELIN Guide gave it one Key in 2025 and again in 2026.
