The hotel

Built around a stone desk.

Maud Truchi, who grew up in the Philippines, founded Maslina on a bay just outside Stari Grad, a town listed by UNESCO. It opened in 2020 among olive groves, terraced vines and about two hectares of pine. The Croatian architect Tomislav Alujević kept the buildings low and set the public rooms underground, following the line of the hill, and Thomas Seconde laid out the grounds.

Before the walls went up, a twelve-tonne stone reception desk came by ferry from a neighbouring island and was lowered into place by crane. The façades are wooden lattice, the floors terracotta and wood, the stone Croatian. Léonie Alma Mason took her colours from the pine forest. Every room looks onto the water. The resort works without single-use plastic and has added solar panels.

  • The garden A 7,000 square metre organic garden grows much of what the kitchen cooks. Guests ride through it on wooden bicycles.
  • Pharomatiq Spa Treatments built on lavender, sage and oils from the island's hills, with a sauna, steam room and Turkish bath.
  • The bay A beach of its own on Maslinica bay, two outdoor pools and A Bay Beach Bar at the water's edge.

Getting there

Flying to Hvar.

Everyone flies to Split, on scheduled flights or by private jet, and finishes by sea. A private catamaran from near the airport reaches Stari Grad in about an hour, and the car ferry from Split takes about two hours, our estimate. From the port at Stari Grad the resort is a few minutes by car.

Business & First Class Airline flights In summer British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Edelweiss and KLM fly direct to Split, and United from Newark; Croatia Airlines flies all year. From the port, the fast boats to Hvar town take 55 to 65 minutes.
