The hotel
From the Österreichischer Hof to Sacher.
Carl Freiherr von Schwarz, a hotelier and master builder, put up the building between 1863 and 1866 and called it the Österreichischer Hof. It is ten years older than the Sacher in Vienna. Royalty, nobles and senior clergy stayed here. Once the festival began, it became the place where Max Reinhardt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss met.
The Gürtler family, owners of the Vienna Sacher, bought it in 1988 and redid every room and restaurant in a style true to the house. It took the Sacher name in 2000. Alexandra Winkler, who runs the group with her brother Georg Gürtler, designed each room with the French decorator Pierre-Yves Rochon. The Salzburg house is one of three Sacher hotels.
- The river view Rooms on the Salzach side look across to the old town roofs, the cathedral and Hohensalzburg Fortress.
- Café Sacher Salzburg Light meals and the Original Sacher-Torte, without leaving the hotel.
- Zirbelzimmer The gourmet restaurant, a wood-panelled room where Michael Gahleitner cooks.
