The hotel

A private house on Lake Atitlán.

Casa Palopó was a private home on the slope above Lake Atitlán before it opened as a small hotel in 2000. The lake is the deepest in Central America, ringed by Maya villages, with the volcanoes Tolimán, Atitlán and San Pedro rising on the far shore. Many of the staff come from Santa Catarina Palopó, the village just along the road.

The main house is painted in strong colours, with dark wood, tiles and Guatemalan art both contemporary and indigenous. Above it, a newer villa in leather and soft beige has its own heated infinity pool, a fireplace and soaking tubs facing the lake. It became the first Relais & Châteaux hotel in Guatemala, and in 2025 one of the first two in the country to receive MICHELIN Keys.

  • Three volcanoes Tolimán, Atitlán and San Pedro stand across the water from the terraces and the rooms.
  • By helicopter A helipad on the grounds puts Guatemala City about twenty-five minutes away, against roughly four hours by road.
  • Kinnik A space at the water's edge, where evenings are spent round the fire.
